Mistakes That Reduce The Life Of Kitchen Tools

Because of the daily use of kitchen utensils, we sometimes use some of them incorrectly, which reduces their life span and makes them get damaged before their time. Among these mistakes are those we make while cleaning or cooking. Here are the most prominent mistakes that reduce the life of kitchen tools so that we can avoid them.

Don’t use stainless steel spoons:

All stainless steel spoons cause scratches in the pots and pans that we use to prepare food, regardless of the quality of these pots, and this leads to making these tools unsuitable for cooking.  It is recommended; in this case; to use wooden spoons, because they do not cause scratches.

Don’t use disinfectants for cleaning:

As with stainless steel spoons, it can be worse, cleaning kitchen utensils with disinfectants will cause many scratches inside and out, so it is not recommended to use them. To get rid of stuck-on and stubborn food residue, we can soak the kitchenware in water for a while, which makes it easier to loosen the stuck-on residue.

Disorganization of cutting boards:

As for the cutting boards, they should be as follows, one for vegetables, another for meat, and the third board for fish. Do not mix them together, as if we use the board for vegetables to cut meat, in order to prevent the transmission of bacteria from one board to another. When washing cutting boards, we must ensure that they are well-dried, because if they are packed and still wet, they will not only multiply with bacteria but also be damaged and spoiled.

Use of the dishwasher:

The dishwasher can be the best time saver when it comes to washing kitchen utensils.  However, it is worth knowing that not all kitchen tools are suitable for washing in the dishwasher, so some types of utensils should not be placed in the dishwasher because this will lead to damage.

Cast iron kitchenware should never be put in the dishwasher. When a dishwasher is running, the conditions inside are hot and humid, which is not ideal for cast iron tools. These conditions will cause these utensils to rust and wash away the condiments (the protective non-stick coating). Instead, wash cast iron tools by hand.

There are also other kitchen tools that should not be placed in the dishwasher, or you have to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and advice before washing them in a dishwasher, such as non-stick and stainless-steel pots and pans. In addition, the use of the dishwasher for copper utensils is not recommended. Washing them in the dishwasher may dull their beautiful shine and color. Instead, wash it by hand, and if your copper pan has a burnt bottom, sprinkle it with salt, then cover it with white vinegar and let the solution sit for 15 seconds before scrubbing.

Simple tips for maintaining kitchen utensils:

  • Use low heat when cooking.
  • Avoid heating an empty Tefal frying pan (non-stick pan).
  • Use a wooden spoon so as not to scratch non-stick kitchen tools.
  • Use a silicone spatula so as not to cause scratches to ceramic and granite utensils.
  • Avoid cutting vegetables inside the pots.
  • Avoid using a coarse stainless steel wool scrubber to clean utensils.
  • Wash utensils with lukewarm water, and do not put cold water in non-stick and ceramic pots while they are hot.
  • When frying food, it is preferable to grease the pan with a small amount of oil or fat, and not in a large amount.

Conclusion

If you want to keep the kitchen appliances and maintain them, you must follow some tips, as mentioned above, such as using low heat when cooking, and avoiding heating an empty non-stick frying pan. Also, it is recommended to clean cooking utensils immediately after using them.  Otherwise, keeping utensils unclean for a long time causes food residues to stick to them, and thus look dirty despite washing.

In addition, you should clean cooking utensils with appropriate products that do not cause the utensils to be scratched and damaged, thus reducing their life span. Finally, it is recommended to dry the pots and pans well with a dry towel or a clean cloth after you have finished using them. This step is ignored by many ladies, but it is very important.
